A figure of immense historical importance, the Hagia Sophia "Ayasofya" is the prominent church of the Byzantine Empire, which stood as a great symbol of Christianity. It became a mosque after the Ottoman Empire conquered Constantinople in 1453. In 1934, the Turkish government decided to establish the large mosque as a museum, aiming to showcase its grandeur repository of its long history, involving the many religions, peoples, and historical events.
