Handmade Korean "Shield Kites" (Pangp'aeyon/방패연)

Updated: Sep 1, 2021

Kite flying has been prominent in Korean culture, even since the date of 600 AD. The shield kite is one of the most popular Korean kites to date. The shield kite is made from five bamboo sticks covered in traditional Korean mulberry paper. A circular hole is made in the center, and its diameter is half the width of the kite.

Shield Kite 1

Adorned with 3 red circles. Kite patterned in white and black, reminiscent of traditional Korean styling of these types of kites. Handcrafted by Andrew Lee.

Shield Kite 2

Creatively designed to incorporate the national Korean flag into the kite design. Although we can see the taeguek (red and blue circle in Korean flag) in the center, this is placed strategically on top of the bamboo sticks, so the kite hole in the center is not covered. Handcrafted by Andrew Lee.
