Updated: Sep 1, 2021

The Japanese folding fan serves as a historical symbol of prosperity and wealth in Japan, and was invented during the 8th century. They were commonly used in high society and are primarily used for cooling oneself in hot weather. Traditionally, the fan is made up of sticks that are used to open, close, and hold the fan. In ancient Japan, oval and silk fans were influenced by Chinese fans, and are made of paper on a bamboo frame. With its practical use as well as its significance in ceremonies, it subsequently spread and became adopted across other parts of Asia, including Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka.
