Korean "Obangsaek" Art ("five-orientation-color"/오방색)

Updated: Sep 1, 2021

In Korean culture, there are five colors that are incorporated into many aspects of Korean life and tradition. Under the concept of "obangsaek", which defines the traditional Korean color spectrum, the five colors are red, blue, yellow, white, and black. Each of the five colors are associated with a corresponding direction (south, east, center, west, north respectively) and element of earth (fire, wood, earth, metal, water respectively). These colors, directions, and elements are incorporated with each other to form a harmony of good and bad. Overall, the obangsaek represents the profound understanding of harmonization with nature. It showcases how important the balance between both of these are in traditional Korean lifestyle.
