"Minhwa" Korean Folk Art ("painting of the people"/민화)

Updated: Sep 1, 2021

Minhwa art quite literally translates to "painting of the people" or "popular painting", and this style of art is a genre made for Korean commoners. An unorthodox style of Korean art, minhwa exemplifies expressive freedom and the inner dreams and thoughts of the people. Although minhwa lacks the refined elegance of traditional Korean paintings, its unconventional uniqueness in its layout and vibrant colors are significant to the diversified scope of Korean art aesthetic.

Flower & Butterfly Minhwa Art

Using traditional paper, the subjects of the minhwa painting (the butterflies and the flowers) are made with vibrant shades of pink, green, red, etc. The structure is attached to extended bamboo sticks on the top and bottom of the art. Handcrafted by Peter Lee.
