Experience Bellevue: Mongolian Dolls: Queen and Traditional Sculptures

Updated: Oct 9, 2022

For the Mongolian Queen sculpture, the artist was inspired by how married Mongol women of high social standing wore their hair in the shape of cow horns. The unique hairstyle was derived from the belief that cows are the embodiment of independence and nomadic existence. Also, this hairstyle was also worn by Queen Genepil, the last queen of Mongolia, whom Queen Amidala, from the Star Wars Anthology, was based off of.

For the duo pieces to the left, the artist simply repainted the faces of pre-made dolls, and the dolls are portrayed as a married couple. Their base wear portrays Mongolian traditional garments (Deel). In addition to the deel, the artist incorporates a unique twist by adding organdy ribbon and felt fabric as an outerwear to enhance the appearance of the work.
