Known as a traditional percussion instrument, they are believed to have originated from the Tainos, a native tribe of Puerto Rico. The instrument was made from the fruit of the higuera tree, influencing the general shape of the maraca. The pulp is taken out of the fruit and is filled with tiny pebbles to give the instrument a distinct sound. Nowadays, the rattle syncretized with cultures from around the world and appears in many genres of Caribbean and Latin music, and can be made of different mediums like leather, wood, plastic, or ceramic.
