“In Japanese culture, women were instilled with values of respect and modesty. In this panel, I aim to show Samurai feudalism, highlighting gender roles lingering in today’s Japanese society. Showcasing the significance of the wealth and someone’s class, I depict an affluent family, decorating the women with traditional jewelry and ornaments signifying materialistic culture. I also incorporate cherry blossoms in a rough tone to create a more vintage feel. Most importantly, I use perspective to show the samurai’s care for his partner, showcasing his loyalty and the stereotype of ‘a damsel in distress.’”
