Experience Bellevue: Picchwai/Warli Art and Ancient Indian Folk Art

Updated: Oct 9, 2022

The piece on the left was inspired from a blend of two art forms, Pichhwai and Warli. Pichhwai is an art form that originated from Rajasthan, India. They are usually large devotional Hindu painted pictures of various symbols, such as cows or peacocks. The other art form is Warli, originating from Maharashtra, India. The art usually depicts pre-historic scenes of human figures engaged in activities like hunting, dancing, sowing and harvesting. Using precise sketch markers combined with full paint strokes, the artist's piece is a combination of the two art forms!

On the right, the piece depicts one amongst the plenty of battles that took place within the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata. Every character in the epic is born into a particular social group, or caste, that must follow the duty prescribed to it by sacred law. This art is in the style of old Indian scriptures done using sketch markers. The edges are painted through with coffee to give it a rustic look and enhance the traditional, ancient medium.
