Experience Bellevue: "Serenity of South Asia" : South India and South Vietnam

Updated: Oct 9, 2022

On the left, the acrylic on the 24"x19" canvas is called "Serenity of Vietnamese Rice Fields", where the artist wanted to capture the serenity of Vietnamese rice fields, which are an integral part of rural Vietnamese villages. The scene is during the morning, before the blazing afternoon sun reaches the villages. This is captured by the intense warm colors of the sunrise which contrast the cool colors of the dawning sky and muted colors of the rice fields. The style is impressionistic, which I found to better portray the contrast of colors.

The acrylic-painted CD below it is called "Serenity of Vietnamese Village Life", which portrays a Vietnamese school girl passing a rural village's market. A Vietnamese schoolgirl's uniform consists of a white áo dài, and a very typical method of transportation is a bike. This is a very typical morning in a rural village and again uses an impressionistic style.

On the right, the acrylic canvas are the same dimensions, where instead of a representation of Vietnamese culture, it represents South Indian culture in similar mediums, which enhances the coherence of the joint project. The canvas piece in the back was inspired heavily from Kerala sceneries which typically exhibit vibrant greenery and tropical forest settings. The artist drew the main outline sketches from a mix of pictures in Kerala as well as pieces from my experience around the village side in India. Through this, she mainly wanted to focus on a part of India away from an often seen busy city setting and more towards a somewhat traditional setting.

Below this is a media of acrylic and dried flowers on the disc, inspired by Kolusu which is an Indian anklet and they typically emit a soft jingle upon movement. Shifting the focus to material displays of culture, one of my favorite parts of my Indian heritage is the traditional jewelry and especially how they sometimes draw in both visual and auditory appeal.
