Experience Bellevue: Traditional Chinese Lanterns and Dragon

Updated: Oct 9, 2022

The crafts that the artist has brought today are two Chinese lanterns. In China, they are hung as decorations for some Chinese Festivals, such as the Spring festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. These lanterns are usually red as Chinese people favor this color, believing it will bring good luck and happiness. This originated in ancient China when red was used to ward away monsters, specifically a beast called "Nian" that used to come out on Chinese New Year to attack people, but was afraid of the color red. When making these lanterns, the artist used detailed red paper and string to honor her culture.

The papercraft propped above is a cut-out Chinese dragon. It is commonly believed that the dragon symbolizes wealth, strength, and good luck in Chinese culture. Furthermore, in Chinese mythology, the dragon has also been depicted as giving wisdom and our ancestor. As a result, the dragon is deeply rooted in her culture and is often seen in Chinese artwork. In addition, she cut this dragon out in red as, like the dragon, red is also an auspicious sign, making the two go well with each other.
