Traditional Korean "Hapjukseon" fan (합죽선)

Made of paper-thin bamboo strips covered with paper and wood, traditional Korean "hapjukseon" fans convey beautiful artistic originality in its styles. Korean hand fans often contain beautiful landscapes, paintings of animals and nature, and evens poem written with a beautiful calligraphic form. They also have significant historical significance in Korean culture. Dating back to the Goryeo Dynasty, the hapjukseon fans symbolize the distinct societal hierarchies. Fans with less than 40 strips of bamboo were used by the lower class, fans with 40 strips were used by the noble class, and fans with 50 strips were used by the royal families.





Patterned Hapjukseon Fan

Homemade "hapjukseon" folding fan with a pattern of a tree branch and colorful shrubbery attached. Used bamboo-like wood to create the foundation and attached jade rocks to the fan. Handcrafted by Andrew Lee.
