Traditional Korean "Sogo" Drum (소고)

Updated: Sep 1, 2021

There are many types of drums played in Korea, and one of them is known as the Korean sogo drum. The sogo is a small drum with thin hides on the two sides of a thin wooden body. A short wooden handle is attached to the drum body, and the drum surface is usually made out of cowhide. People who use the sogo drums not only use the drum heads to produce sound, but they also use the stick of the drum and other parts of the drum to produce a more dynamic range of sound. The size and shape of the sogo often vary, but because these drums are handheld, they are not created to be too large.

Homemade Sogo Drum

Crafted the sogo drum through creating the drum head and attaching the handheld stick. Painted a Korean Sam-Taegeuk (삼태극), which is a tri-colored symbol consisting of blue, red, and yellow, on the surface of the drum. Handcrafted by Peter Lee.
